3 Die In 2 Weekend Traffic Accidents

FATAL ACCIDENT ON BIRMINGHAM - STOCKPORT BLACKTOP SATURDAY

Darrell Robert Rains, 19, of Birmingham was killed in a one-car accident at 12:30 a.m. Saturdy on the Birmingham-Stockport blacktop road a mile and a fourth southeast of Birmingham.

His death is the third teen-age highway fatality in Van Buren County in three weeks.

Van Buren County Sheriff Orville Lee said Rains is believed to be the driver of the 1967 care which three young men were riding. Jack Diephus, 17, and Fred Haines, 16, both of Bonaparte were treated at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and dismissed.

The accident occurred on a curve in the road near the Lyle Crawford farm. The eastbound car left the road, went into a ditch and rolled over twice. Rains was thrown from the car and pinned beneath it.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rains of rural Birmingham, he was a 1972 graduate of Van Buren Community High Scool at Keosauqua and was in the Army National Guard, having recently served six months of active duty at Ft. Dix, N.J.

He was born October 5, 1953 at Keosauqua to Robert and Beulah Parrot Rains. They survived as do two brothers, Roy of Birmingham and Allen of Fairfield, and one sister, Mrs. Carolyn Parker of Bonaparte. He was employed at the Stockport Locker.

The funeral was held Monday at the Birmingham Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Millard Marshall. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery near Douds. Burch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
