ANDREW JACKSON POE.

Born in Crawford County, Ohio,
March 17, 1817, Died near
Anson, Mo., July, 8, 1902.

OBITUARY SKETCH

The subject of this sketch was born in Crawford county, Ohio, March 17, 1817. In 1837 he came to Bonaparte and worked in the carpenter trade. He married Rachel Jane Meek and they lived on the farm now owned by L. C. Meek, Mr. Poe building thereon the residence which Mr. Meek moved away when he built the new residence. To them were born nine children: Cynthia, who married Wm. Dawson, is the mother of the Dawson girls who are now living in Bonaparte; William and Robert are in California; Mary and Hugh live near Anson, Mo., on the farm where Mr. Poe lived since the close of the Civil War; Charles is at Cooks, New Mexico; Sarah married Chas. Hopps and lives near Chambersburg, Mo.; Byron lives near Alexandria, Mo.; and Ivy married Wm. Wilson and resides in Keokuk.

Mr. Poe left Bonaparte just previous to the Civil War and went to Boone County where he remained until his removal to a farm near Anson, Mo., about 1865.

Mr. Poe was a gentleman of splendid physique being a wonderful walker, preferring walking to riding, and thinking it no great feat to walk across a state like Iowa. Like Gladstone he enjoyed woodchopping and when more than eighty years of age took his axe to the woods every morning and used it for exercise. He was more than six feet in height but of rather slender build.

Mr. Poe died at his home near Anson, Mo., Tuesday, July 8, 1902 and a funeral service was held at Bonaparte on Wednesday, July 9, Rev. Ayrault officiating. Only five of the children could be present, the others being too far away to come. The remains were interred in the cemetery at Bonaparte.

The life of another of Iowa's pioneers has ended and he has gone to his lon{g?) home. Only a few such remain for at the time of his death A. J. Poe was eighty-five years, three months, and twenty-one days of age.
