LAWRENCE WALSH.
Born in Ireland, Educated at Trinity
College, and Died at Bentonsport.IOWA INF. CO. B. 13 REG.
Lawrence Walsh was born in County Wexford, Ireland, on January 15, 1824, and died in Bentonsport, Iowa, Feb. 13, 1902, being at the time of his death 78 years and 28 days old.
He was educated in Trinity college Dublin, Ireland, and it was the desire of his parents that he become a catholic priest but he was too strongly imbued with protestation for such things and selling his books and pony emigrated to America, landing in Boston in 1847. Coming to Bentonsport in 1854 he was married to Mary E. Woodruff in the fall of 1856. There were born to this union two boys, Henry L. and Charles A., who mourn the loss of a kind father and safe counselor.
Mr. Walsh entered the service of the Union army in Co. B, 13 Iowa Inf. As a private and belonged to what was known as Crocker's brigade.
During a revival of religion in 1868 he was happily converted to God and with his wife united with the Presbyterian church on confession of faith in Christ but in after years owing to circumstances drifted away and to use his own language "felt ashamed to confess his faults and renew his allegiance." Before passing to the other world he witnessed a good confession and died happy in a forgiving Savior. Mr. Walsh has always been highly esteemed by all those who knew of his manly qualities and goodness of heart.
He had been entrusted with many high and important positions of trust, filling he office of town assessor for a number of years and at the time of his death was mayor of the town.
"Larry" as he was familiarly called will be missed by his friends and neighbors but what is our loss is his infinite gain as he has gone where pain and suffering are felt no more.
