Obituary of Mrs. Mae Ebert

Miss Mae Castilla Kent was born at Pittsburg, Iowa, December 18, 1878, died at her home in Birmingham, Iowa, November 24th, 1918, age 39 years, 11 months and 6 days.

She was married September 11, 1901, to Mr. A. C. Ebert of Birmingham. For the past 25 years she has lived in this community where she made many friends and was greatly loved by everyone.

In March 1917 she took seriously ill and was confined to her bed most of these long months. In her sickness every attention was given her by the family. Neighbors were also very kind in their expression of friendship. She often expressed sincere appreciation for these things and wished she could do something in return.

She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, Mr. A. C. Ebert, her father Mr. J. E. Kent and her uncles, Mr. George Bowen of Brock, Nebraska, and Rufus Bowen of Wymore, Nebraska, besides many relatives and friends.

Mrs. Ebert will be greatly missed in her home and her community and church. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church of this place about fourteen years ago. The outstanding characteristic of her life was her devotion to the church in all of its departments.

She took charge of a class of boys in Sunday School when they were small and was their faithful teacher until they grew to manhood, when the entire class either enlisted for their country or moved to other places. She prided herself in these boys and did every thing she could to keep them together and to live for Christ. They were her constant prayer and every boy knew that Mae, as they called her, was their sincere friend.

She realized the end was drawing near and was ready to meet her Lord. She often quoted verses of scripture and prayed. These were the strength of her life. Thus she bore her cross cheerfully.

She was loyal to the Red Cross and the church as long as she could. When she could no longer attend she wept for the prayer meetings and preaching services. The reading of the Scripture and prayer by her pastor helped to take the place of the Sunday services which she missed.

It is a sweet thought to know that her soul took the flight as the tones of the Sunday School bells were heard on the frosty air calling the classes together.

The funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. J. Fowler, and the body laid to rest in the Birmingham cemetery.
