An Old Settler, Having
Located in Iowa in 1841.Peyton Dawson, who died at his home at Big Mound, Monday, Oct. 21, 1901, was one of the oldest settlers of Iowa. He was born in Shelbyville, Ky., March 5, 1819. In 1832 he removed to Jacksonville, Ill. where he remained until 1838 when he came to Iowa and permanently located in 1841. December 22, 1842, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Stotard of West Point and soon afterward purchased a claim near Summitville, Mrs. Dawson died Feb. 13, 1747 [sic], leaving him three children, two of whom died in infancy leaving only one, Mrs. Jas. Kennedy to survive her father. Mrs. Sarah Sartare became his wife Aug. 7, 1849, and to this union were born thirteen children. His wife and eight of their children, four girls and four boys survive him. Mr. Dawson united with the Christian church when a young man and throughout his life was an earnest and devout Christian. He was a charter member or the Christian church at Big Mound and the erection of that church was largely through his efforts. The funeral occurred Wednesday, Oct. 23, and was largely attended.
