Death of George C. Countryman

The death of George C. Countryman of New London, occurred at Glendale, Cal., on Wednesday, the 16th, following an operation for appendicitis. George, with his wife and little daughter went to California some weeks ago to visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Countryman, and at that time had a family reunion, which we made note of a few weeks ago. About two weeks ago it was found necessary to operate on George for appendicitis, and a week later a second imperative operation for peritonitis. The effect of the two operations with weakening of the heart caused his death.

George was born and raised in Birmingham, and in the year 1900 was in partnership here with E. H. Alton in the furniture and undertaking business. In the spring of 1901 he moved to New London, during which time he has been in the undertaking business. He was public spirited and went into everything with a vim, and was quite successful. At the home in New London he was a director of the Iowa State Bank, member of the Chamber of Commerce; also a member of the Masonic Order, Eastern Star, I. O. O. F., Rebekah and K. of P. He is survived by his wife, daughter Martha Lee, his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Westphal and Mrs. Jessie Spellman of Glendale, Cal., and Dr. Charles countryman of Salt Lake City, Utah. The remains arrived at new London on Monday afternoon, accompanied by his wife, daughter and sister, Mrs. Nellie Westphal and husband. The funeral service was held at the home on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock.
