Obituary for Mrs. Anna Calhoun
Anna M. Torrence was born near Birmingham, Iowa, January 26, 1862, and passed away at her home after a lingering illness on May 29, 1924, aged 62 years, 4 months and 3 days.
She grew to womanhood and practically her entire life was spent in the vicinity of Birmingham. She was of a family of six children, her parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
She was united in marriage with N. L. Calhoun, May 21, 1895, he having preceeded[sic] her to the better land on August 15, 1921.
She united with the Presbyterian church at the age of twenty years, and has lived a consistent christian life, being interested and a worker in all the activities of the church. She was a member of the Woman’s Adult class of the Sunday School and was a faithful member until illness prevented her attendance. The class attended the funeral in a body, as evidence of their sorrow and sympathy. For a number of years she has been in failing health, but the past year has been and invalid and was tenderly and lovingly cared for by her niece, Mrs. Rose McMillen. In her suffering, at times being very severe, she was cheerful and bore it with a christian’s faith, and frequently remarked “It is all right.”
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Clark of Zealandia, Saskatchewan, Canada, Mrs. Lizzie Fulton of Fairfield, Iowa, a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church on Saturday afternoon, May 31, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Coleman, and the body laid to rest in Maple Hill cemetery.
