Obituary

VALENTINE CUPP was born near Winchester, Van Buren county, Iowa, September 24, 1849. He died at his home one half mile north of the place of his birth, October 22, 1898

He was married to Miss Mary C. Glanden on ____?____, 1872. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Cupp, two of whom have preceded the father to the __?___ land. Mr. Cupp joined the Presbyterian church of Mount Zion about four years ago. He was a man well known and highly respected throughout the community. He lived an humble Christian life and endeavored to bring up his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. He was an officer in the church and was faithful to all his duties. Never of very robust health, he was uniformally[sic] cheerful and companionable. On his sick bed he was never heard to murmur or complain but bore his sufferings with resignation and patience to the last. Had it been God’s will, he would have liked to have lived to see his younger children grown, but was content to depart, known[sic] that “He doeth all things well,” and that to depart and be with Christ is far better. It was a matter of thankfulness to him that he had been born and raised amid such surroundings as those in which his lot was cast, and he felt in his last sickness the deepest gratitude to his friends and neighbors for their many acts of kindness and love.

The funeral services were held on Sabbath afternoon, October 23. A great company gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to a beloved friend and neighbor. After brief exercises at the home, the services were held at Millers chappel.[sic] A great congreation[sic] assembled on this occasion which more than filled the large house of worship. Rev. C. S. McElhinny, pastor of Mount Zion Presbyterian church, conducted the services and preached from Psalms 90:12; “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” The interment took place in the adjoining burial ground.
