The Keosauqua Republican, Keosauqua, Iowa; Thursday, March 12, 1896, page 3, column 6:

Robert Hunter, aged 75 years past, died at 9 o'clock Sunday evening at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa. We are justified we think in saying that he came about as near leaving this world without an enemy living as any individual that ever called Keosauqua his home. For a long time Mr. Hunter has been in poor health and his death was not unexpected. He was born in Pennsylvania, and in 1838 was married in Virginia to the wife who died in Keosauqua, May 5, 1889. In 1852 he moved to Iowa and settled in this place which since has been his home. During the war he served as deputy sheriff of Van Buren County. He was indeed a good man. Several children were born into the family, four of whom are yet living, all being at the funeral. He was a member of the Methodist church, Rev. Gilbert of that denomination preaching the sermon at the funeral which was held Tuesday of this week, many attending.

The Weekly State Line Democrat, Keosauqua, Iowa, Thursday, March 12, 1896, page 2, column 5:

Death of Robert Hunter. Mr. Robert Hunter, an old and respected citizen of Keosauqua, died Sunday evening at 9 o'clock, after a long illness. Mr. Hunter was born in Pennsylvania in 1820. His parents moved to Ohio where he was raised. In 1838 he married to Miss Matilda Resse, he and his wife having taught school together before their marriage. In 1852 Mr. Hunter came to Keosauqua. In 1855 he joined the M.E. church. From 1872 to 1878 Mr. Hunter was deputy sheriff of this county, his son-in-law, John W. Shane, a very shrewd politician, being the sheriff. Since 1878 Mr. Hunter was for several years engaged in the grocery business. In every calling he was always an honorable, upright Christian gentleman. Mrs. Hunter died in 1889, and his daughter, Mrs. Mary Shane died in 1887. His surviving sons and daughters are Mrs. George Long, Mrs. L.C. Fosnot, and Messrs, Hugh and W. M. Hunter. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. H. Gilbert officiating, the burial being by the Masonic order.
