Mrs. Chas. L. Sheward

Margaret, second child of Marquis and Jane Shriner, was born in Louden, Pennsylvania, July 11, 1842, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.D. Hope, in Birmingham, Iowa, May 19, 1940, aged 97 years, 10 months and 8 days.

She came with her parents and three brothers and sisters to Fairfield when she was six years of age, the trip being made overland and she saw that place grow from a small town to the city of today. She attended the first State Fair which was held there and was a teacher in the public schools of Fairfield, and the rural schools of Jefferson county.

She was united in marriage to C.L. Sheward in Fairfield June 30, 1870, and to them were born two daughters, Stella A. Hope, who survives her, and one who died in infancy. Her husband passed away Oct. 27, 1918.

They moved to Birmingham in January, 1872, and that place has since been her home with the exception of three years spent in Bloomfield, Iowa. She united with the Methodist church in Birmingham about 1882, and has remained a consistent member, always interested in the affairs of the church.

She was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters, she being the last one of the large family. Her passing was the result of infirmities of age and she was wonderfully well preserved for one of her years and always enjoyed life, being of a jovial disposition.

Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.D. Hope, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. F.M. James, her former pastor. Burial in the family lot in Maple Hill cemetery.
