Obituary of George M. Lawson

George M. Lawson was born at Fairfield, Iowa, February 12, 1861, and passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. John Ratcliffe, Muscatine, Iowa, on Friday, August 27, 1920, aged 59 years, 6 months, and 15 days.

He was well known to all in this neighborhood. The past three years he has lived with his sister. During his illness his mind became concentrated on the things that pertain to the salvation of the soul and was visited in his affliction by Rev. Leonard W. Westrete, a Baptist minister and son-in-law of Mrs. Ratcliffe, who ministered to his spiritual needs, and his prayer before his departure from this earthly home of this pilgrimage was one of blessed assurance of his acceptance with God through Jesus Christ our Lord. He was a member of the Brethren church.

He leaves to mourn his death two sisters, Mrs. Josiah Martin of Fairfield, and Mrs. John Ratcliffe of Muscatine. Two brothers, Andrew Lawson of Montana, and Joe Lawson of Alexandria, La., also a large number of relatives and friends.

"Let me die the death of the righteous and let my latter end be like His," is an ancient prayer, repeated by myriads in each succeeding generation. Let me live the righteous life is a more appropriate prayer. From the depths of our heart let us this day make this declaration: "Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to Thee."

The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church at Birmingham, Rev. R. Roberts, the pastor officiating. The remarks were based upon the 34th chapter of Deuteronomy. Miss Thelma Knight of Muscatine sang two solos "Face to Face" and "Somewhere the Sun is Shining," in a very impressive manner. Interment was made in Maple Grove (Hill) Cemetery of Birmingham.

(I have researched the LAWSON lineage for over 40 years.)
