Sam Smutz, 82, Dies Suddenly

STOCKPORT-Sam S. Smutz, 82, died suddenly Thursday afternoon at the Mobil Service Station in Stockport.

Services will be held Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. in the Stockport Methodist Church with the Rev. Millard Marshall and the Rev. Kenneth Suetterlin in charge. Burial will be in Hillsboro Cemetery. Masonic graveside services will be in charge of the Stockport Workman Lodge No. 634.

Smutz was born March 27, 1890 near Stockport, the son of Benjamin and Catherine McVeigh Smutz. He married Clara Derr on Feb. 17, 1917.

Smutz operated the Stockport Cfe for 19 years before his retirement. He served as mayor of Stockport for a number of years.

He was a member of the Workman Lodge No. 634, AF&AM of Stockport and served as worshipful master in 1950.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, Waldo Smutz of Keosauqua and Ted Smutz of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son and two daughters
