Mrs. Jacob Guy Hootman

Mary L. Porter was born in Kilbourne, Iowa, on the banks of the Des Moines river, September 22, 1862. Here she grew to young womanhood at the proper age she entered the common school and completed the work as it was completed in those days. She finished her education at Highland Park college in Des Moines, Iowa. After this she taught for twelve years in the public schools of the state. In 1893 she was married to Jacob Guy Hootman. To this union were born two children, Lenore and Guy. Her husband died in 1896, leaving her to care for the two small children. Through many vicissitudes, she nobly performed the duties of a true mother and guide. In 1907, she bade goodbye to her old home and friends and bravely and courageously set out to make a new home in Whittier, Calif., where she lived until 1918 when she moved to Avoca Heights. She was converted and joined the M. E. at the age of eighteen years and was a faithful member until called to join the church triumphant June 6, 1931.

Funeral services were held in the Juente[sic-Puente] community church, Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. M. G. Wenz preached from the text. Interment was in Rose Hills Memorial Park, near Whittier, California.

Note: I am researching the Hootman family.
