-----------
Union Township Resident Died Sunday
At His Home Near Troy

William H. Darnell, son of Joseph R. and Margaret C. Darnell was born at Troy, Iowa, October 12, 1855, and died at his home near Troy, January 27th, 1929, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 14 days.

He was united in marriage with Miss Orpha Noel, February 22, 1882, and to this union were born one daughter, Elsie (Mrs. John Chaplin) and two sons, Ellis Noel, who preceded his parents in death about two years, and Homer J. of Nevada, Iowa.

Mr. Darnell united with the Presbyterian church of Troy, during the year 1877 but in later years transferred his membership to the M. E. church at the same time his children united with that church.

He had been in declining health ever since the tragic death of his wife last June.

His weakened bodily condition made him an easy victim for influenza which was followed by pneumonia and paralysis. He passed peacefully and quietly away Sunday morning at 4:15 to be with his loved ones gone before.

He leaves one brother, F. M. Darnell and one sister Lizzie Leach; his daughter and husband; his son and wife; eleven grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. One little granddaughter, Evelyn Chaplin, aged four months passed away only four days before.

After the death of his companion, the daughter and family resided in his home to care for him in his declining years.

His family have lost a kind and indulgent father, the brother and sister, a dearly beloved brother, the community, an honest and upright citizen, and the neighbors a helpful and sincere friend.

Funeral services were held from the M. E. church Monday afternoon in charge of the local pastor, J. C. Bruvold, with interment in the Troy cemetery. The services were impressive and well attended. The funeral discourse was based on the text St. John 14:1-3, to the comforting of relatives and friends.

Three numbers were beautifully given by the quartette consisting of Mrs. Lev Troutman, Mrs. Wallace Russell, Alvin Rosser and Carl Erhardt. The songs were “The City Foursquare,” “Rock of Ages” and “Shall we Gather at the River.” ______ the remainder has been cut off________.

INJURED BY HORSE

Mr. Will Darnell of near Troy had the misfortune of being painfully injured by a horse Thursday of last week. Mr. Darnell had been working in the field with his team and was returning to the house in the evening. All of a sudden one of the horses whirled completely around knocked Mr. Darnell down and then stepped on him with the result that three ribs were broken.

About five weeks ago Mrs. Darnell was injured by a frightened cow as she was letting the animal out of the barn. Mrs. Darnell was knocked down and trampled to such an extent that she died a couple weeks after the accident. The family seems to be in a run of hard luck.
