James W. Burns.
James Wilson Burns was born July 13, 1843, in Van Buren county, Iowa, and departed this life at his home in Vernon Monday, April 10, 1911, at 7:45 P. M. aged 67 years, 8 months and 27 days.
When the call came for volunteers to fight for their country he enlisted in Co. F. 11th Iowa Inf. Oct 14, 1861, and served his country until January 9, 1861, [date as written] when he was honorably discharged because of disability. He was a member of Shriver Post No. 177 at Vernon.
June 20, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Gillaspie and to this union were born eight daughters and one son, all of whom with the faithful wife and mother are left to mourn their loss, all except Mrs. F. O. Pratt of Blackwell, Oklahoma, being in attendance at the funeral which was held Wednesday, April 12, Rev. T. L. Smith of the Bonaparte Baptist church officiating with the interment in the Vernon cemetery.
His death was caused by pulmonary trouble with which he had been afflicted for years.
Following are the names of the children: -- Mrs. Alice Groves of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Lydia Pratt of Blackwell, Okla.; Mrs. Rosa Davis, Mrs. Jessie Henry, and Mrs. Nettie Etka of Bentonsport; Mrs. Josephine Leggett of Cameron, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Cochran of Cantril; Mr. Randall Burns of Keokuk; and Miss Gussie who is still at the old home.
