Carroll H. Stewart.
Carroll Haviland Stewart was born in Bonaparte, Iowa, November 26, 1886, and died at Des Moines, Iowa, April 13, 1909, aged 22 years, 4 months and 28 days. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Haviland Stewart, his father having passed away a few months ago at Marshalltown. He leaves to mourn, his mother, Mrs. H. Stewart of Bonaparte; an only brother, Delbert, of Des Moines; and six sisters viz., Mrs. Clara Dobson, Mrs. Lucy Grim, and Mrs. Bertha Maloney of Des Moines; Mrs. Pearl Jobe of St. Louis; Mrs. Bessie *er of Greenfield, Iowa; and Mrs. Floy Smith of Bonaparte, all of whom attended the funeral services except Mrs. *er.
He took his own life about eight o'clock Tuesday evening with a revolver while in the bathroom of the house were he was boarding. He was employed in the Smith - Heney Mattress factory. At the supper table that evening he seemed in the usual health and spirits.
The following letter he left for his sister, Mrs. Grim; -- "Dear Lucy: -- I am doing this for the best. Please do not bury me, but have me cremated after death. Do as I tell you. If you bury me, bury me by Pa. Goodbye, Carroll."
He had a serious disability caused by paralysis when an infant and his physical condition may have had much to do with his death. He had often expressed a wish to be cremate after death, this being reiterated in the note to his sister.
The remains were brought to Bonaparte Wednesday and funeral services were held at the old home Thursday afternoon, Rev. Jas. Clark officiating. The remains were intered [sic] in the Bonaparte cemetery.
