Mrs. Sophie Chapman
Mrs. Sophie Chapman, 94, of Bonaparte, died Friday, Jan. 23, at 5 a.m. in Van Buren County Memorial hospital, Keosauqua, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Sept. 28, 1875 in Germany, the daughter of Christian Hempen and Helen Schroeder Hempen. She came to the United States in 1881.
On Oct. 21, 1914, at Gladbrook, Iowa, she married Will Allen Chapman. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by one son, Roy Chapman of Bonaparte; one niece whom she raised, Mrs. Byron (Clara) Muntz of Boanparte; one sister, Mrs. Ferd Tompsen of Dugald, Canada; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one step-daughter and two sisters.
The funeral service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Bonaparte Presbyterian church with the Rev. Edward Maus officiating. Burial was in Bonaparte cemetery.
Miller's Home for Funerals in Farmington was in charge of arrangements.
