JOHN WESLEY BURTON: - Was the son of William and Catherine Burton.
He was born in Scott county, Kentucky, near Lexington on the 11th of December 1811. His father was a Methodist minister and owned a farm in this county, where Methodist services were often held and during the summer months religious services were held and sometimes campmeetings. During Mr. Burton's last weeks of life his failing and fading mental vision often recalled those peaceful and beautiful experiences of early life.
William Burton, his father, died when the deceased was eleven years of age. A few years later he immigrated with his mother and sisters to Illinois and a little later to Iowa, locating in Van Buren county, in the fall of 1836, where he married in the fall of 1840 to Miss Abigal Clarkson Freeman who with five children, two daughters and three sons, and four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild survive him. Thus Mr. Burton lived for more than fifty-eight years on his farm west of town, and last November Mr. and Mrs. Burton quietly celebrated their golden wedding. Mr. Burton was most of his life identified with the Methodist church, but always a firm believer in the second personal coming of Christ. About thirteen years ago he became a member of a church organization which fully embraced these. He died June 18, and his funeral was preached by the pastor, E. Y. Carl.
