CHISMAN, CILVIL WAR VET, IS DEAD

Palmer Chisman, 86 years old, died at 2:15 o’clock this morning at his home, 174 North Davis street. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katherine Chisman; one son, C. L. of Aurora, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. George Stuber of Belleville, Kan., Mrs. C. E. Mace of Ottumwa and Mrs. W. D. Gee of Chicago, and one brother Ross Chisman of Wilmington, Ind.

Mr. Chisman was a member of the J. M. Tuttle post G.A.R. having served in company A Indiana volunteer infantry during the Civil war.

No funeral announcements have been made.

Funeral services for Palmer Chisman, Civil war veteran, who died Thursday at his home, 174 North Davis street, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Willard Street Methodist church. Rev. L. H. Lanning, pastor of the church, will be in charge and burial will be [____cut off_____]

PALMER CHISMAN

Palmer Chisman, son of Elias and Elizabeth Chisman, was born in Wilmington, Ind., Feb. 11, 1939, and died at his home, 174 North Davis street, Thursday morning, April 16, aged 86 years, 2 months and 5 days.

He grew to manhood in his native state. On the outbreak of the Civil war, with patriotic devotion he gave himself to the service of his country serving three years in Company A, Seventh Indiana regiment, volunteer infantry, as first sergeant.

In 1868 he was united in marriage to Miss Sallie Hayes. To them was born one daughter, Louisa, who survives him. The wife of his youth having died, he was remarried in 1884 to Catherine Clements. To this union were born three children, one son and two daughters, C. L. Chisman of Aurora, Ill.; Mrs. C. E. Mace of Ottumwa, and Mrs. W. D. Gee of Chicago, Ill., who with the widow survive. He is also survived by one brother of Wilmington, Ind. There are eleven grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chisman has been a resident of Iowa for over forty years, coming here from Cincinnati, O., in 1885. His death came very suddenly. He went about as usual on Wednesday, was weak and complained a little in the evening, awakened at 2 o’clock the following morning and within twenty minutes passed away. He was a member of the J. M. Tuttle post, G.A.R.

The funeral was held at the Willard Street M. E. church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. L. H. Lanning having charge assisted in the service by the Daughters of Veterans. Interment was made in Ottumwa cemetery. --- Contrubuted.
