Henry V. Humphreys

Henry V. Humphreys was born one mile north of Bonaparte n the farm now owned by H. A. Whitmore, Feb. 29, 1847. He was the son of Richard and Hannah Humphrey, pioneers of early Iowa. He was the youngest of a family of seven children, four sons George, James, William, and Henry, William and Henry being the only one s who died away from Bonaparte.

Three daughters Mrs. William Chapman, Miss Sallie and Mrs. Fred Radestock dying but eight weeks before her brother Henry.

His whole life was spent amid the scenes of his early childhood. In early manhood he secured employment with the Meek Bros. Woolen Mills Co. of which he was a trusted and valued employee for more than thirty years.

Very early in his young manhood he became a member of Bonaparte lodge 73 A.F. & A.M. and was a consistent member until his death. He served as Junior Warden, Junior Steward and Tyler.

He was married in 1865 to Miss Kate Cresap of Cumberland, Md. They were the parents of three children, Mrs. Bessie Shinbloom of Bentonsport Keith Humphrey and Mrs. Georgia Junkin, of Lead S.D. There are six grand-children.

March 23, 1911 he went to Lead, S.D. where he was employed by the Homestake Mining Co. Thursday, June 22, he was accidentally injured in the face by and explosion in the shop. The wound developed blood poisoning and he died June 23, at 9 p.m.

He was a kind and loving husband, and an indulgent father an upright, honorable and industrious citizen. He will be missed by all. His simple unassuming examples will serve as an incentive to a higher and better life to all who have known him.

Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church in Bonaparte Tuesday, June, 27, at 2:00 p.m. in charge of Bonaparte Lodge A.F. & A. M., the funeral oration being delivered by Rev. J. H. Taylor of Farmington.
