James Cleave was born in Cornwall, England, October 30, 1928. Came to Canada in 1844 and from there to Iowa in 1853. In 1859 he was married to Miss Eliza Borden. Seven children, four of whom are living, were born to them. His wife died in 1870. In 1872 he was married to Miss Judith Robinson. Four children, all of whom are living, resulted from this union. His death occurred Aug. 7 at 12:30 p.m. Aged 70 years, 9 months and 7 days.
The disease which terminated his earthly career was cancer, from which he suffered much of several years. Everything that kind hearts and willing hands could do to alleviate his suffering, was done, but terrible disease conquered at last.
He leaves a wife and eight children and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss. The funeral services were held at the cemetery, conducted by Rev. G. C. Goodenough. The services were shortened very much on account of the rain.
Thus another old settler has left our midst. One by one they are leaving the shores of time and congregating in the bright spirit world where disease and death will never come.
