A Sudden Death.

Monday morning our community was shocked with the announcement that death had claimed for its victim our fellow-townsman, J. T. Humphrye, after a sickness of just one week. Wednesday afternoon the funeral services were held at the Baptist church conducted by Rev. G. W. Barber of Selma, who preached an effecting sermon. After the sermon his many friends took a last sad view of the beloved dead. The Masonic order of which he was an honored member, took charge of the remains and with a large number of our people, conveyed them to the cemetery, where he was laid to rest. The blow is a severe one to the family and a shock hard to bear as they had no idea that death was so near. We can point them to Him who deoth all things well, for consolation in this great hour of need.

James Thomas Humphrye, son of William and Hannah B. Humphryes, was born in London England, March 21st, 1841. Came to America with his parents in 1845 and settled in Van Buren Co. where he made his home until his death. On August 29th 1869 he was married to Miss Mary F. Entler? of Bonaparte, to them were born two children William and Percie who survive him. Mrs. Humphryes died Jan. 1st, 1876. March 21st, 1877 he was married to Miss Margaret F. Whiteley, to them one daughter was born, she died at the age of thirteen months. He was an affectionate husband, loving parent and kind neighbor. Always willing to help in the work of relieving the distressed and ever kind and patient. He had the confidence of his fellow citizens, who had on several occasions placed him in offices of trust in the community. He was interested in the noble cause of higher education that the young man may be fitted for the battle of life. For many years he was identified with the Mason's fraternity and at the time of his death held the second office in is lodge that of Senior Warden. He died Jan. 4, 1892, aged 50 years 9 months and 13 days. He leaves his wife, two children, father, three sisters and one brother to mourn his loss. Mr. Humphrye for several years was a partner of Wm. Sivil in the boot and shoe business and continued business for himself until about a year ago when he sold his stock and has been working at shoemaking.
