Michael Allen Mairet, 58, Ankeny, died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at his home. Born September 28, 1953 in Davenport, Iowa, he attended Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and graduated with a degree in business from the University of Iowa. He married Sally Shafranek on May 1, 1976 in Keosauqua, Iowa.
Mike spent the years between 1974-1981 at the Hotel Manning renovating and restoring the historic site with the help of his brother, Steve, he excavated, designed and built the Sand Bar Lounge. Over this period he developed an endearing relationship with the owners of the Hotel, his grandparents, Mable and Bob. In the following years he became a regional sales representative for Musselmann's and H & B Food Service Companies, providing a line of support for other Iowa businesses like the Hotel Manning.
Mike was a man thoroughly devoted to family. Constantly orchestrating events, he lived to spend time with his children, grandchildren and extended family. Mike accumulated this powerful influence over his family because he played; no game was too big or too small. He was instrumental in re-establishing baseball facilities at Peacock Park, he regularly played board games with the kids or played pool with his siblings and nephews, and he was a high-seeded addition to any poker game. Considered the family restaurant connoisseur he took great pleasure in excursion and dining, visiting Washington, D.C. with his children, spending weeks in Florida during winter months and taking active roles in Mairet family reunions and celebrations.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard E. Mariet. Survivors include his mother, Mary Lou Mairet; ex-wife, Sally Mairet; daughters, Jessica Carlson and Dr. Angela Sorenson (Jason); brother, Steve Mairet (Sue); sisters, Paula Lovejoy (Roger) and Becky Davis (Terry); three grandchildren, Paige, Wyatt and Jonah, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M., Friday, April 6, 2012, at Saint Ann's Episcopal Church in Ankeny. A graveside service will be held in Cantril at 2 p.m., Friday.
