A Double Funeral

A funeral service was held at the Baptist church in Bonaparte on Friday, September 6, that was most unusual, Mrs. W. P. L. Muir, aged seventy-six and her brother Hiram Thompson, aged seventy-two, died within forty-eight hours and were buried at the same time in the Thompson cemetery south of Bonaparte, Rev. Jonathan Lee of Ottumwa officiating.

Mrs. Muir had been seriously ill only a few days. She died on Wednesday just before noon. Her brother died on Monday, but telegram which was sent did not arrive, and Mrs. Muir did not know that her brother had died. In fact Mrs. Thompson and her daughter came here on Wednesday evening with the corpse, not knowing that Mrs. Muir was dead, and the Muirs did not know of the coming of the Thompsons’ until they arrived.

Following are the obituary sketches of the brother and sister being written by the husband, Capt. W.P.L. Muir, and the other by the daughter, Miss Clara Thompson.

Susan Clara Thompson, only daughter of Hiram S. and Eliza Thompson, was born September 29th, 1841 near Quincy, Illinois. In the spring of 1845 she came with her parents and settled on land purchased by her father of the government in Vernon Township, Van Buren county, Iowa. There she grew to womanhood.
On the 7th day of April, 1864 she was united in marriage with Lieut. W.P.L. Muir, then of the U.S. Army, who was home on veteran furlough.
At the close of the war they purchased a farm on Vernon Prairie, Van Buren County, moving to the first home on the 3rd day of March, 1866, where they resided continuously for a little over thirty years, selling the farm and moving to Bonaparte, October 30th, 1896, where they continued to lived until she was called to the Better Home September 4th, 1918, aged 76 years, 11 months and 6 days.
This happy union covered a period of fifty-four and a half years, lacking three days.
Two children were born to them; a son and a daughter, both dying in early childhood. She was converted in her fourteenth year, was.....
