Henry Steele.

Henry Steele was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, Sept. 18, 1830, and died June 20, 1906, at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. E. E. Williams, one mile north of Stockport, Van Buren Co., Iowa, aged 75 years, 9 months and 2 days.

He was married to Miss Catharine McKinzie in June 1856, and moved to Van Buren Co. Iowa, in March, 1857. To this union were born 4 children, two sons and two daughters, the boys dying in infancy. The two girls, Mrs. Lizzie Hinchman and Mrs. Gertie Williams, are left to mourn his loss, his wife having died Sept. 16, 1894. He also leaves as mourners one brother and one sister in California, and one sister in Penn.

He was converted in the early sixties at a meeting in the old Mt. Zion log church near Bonaparte, held by Rev. Samuel Pickard, and at the organization of the present Harrisburg Baptist church, he and his wife, with 72 others went in as charter members of that church.

Father Steele was the owner of a quiet and retiring disposition. He never was prominent in public enterprises of any kind, but in his own quiet way, he "went about doing good." The needy never came to his door, without receiving good counsel, and substantial aid. In his financial policy, he followed closely the injunction "Owe no many anything but to love him and do him good." Socially he was kind and companionable, strictly honest and upright in all his dealings.

When the final summons came, he was ready, and stepped into the dark waters of the Jordan of death with a living hope that "all is well." Funeral services were held at the Harrisburg church Thursday P. M., Rev. Todd pastor of that church officiating. His remains were followed to the Vale cemetery by a long procession of sorrowing friends.

He was a kind husband and an indulgent father. In his death, the neighbors lost a friend, the community a good citizen, and the world an honest man. May he rest in peace. - J. A. HILLER.
