Mrs. Sarah Corns

Sarah McElroy was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, May 24th 1825. She was married to Ira M. Corns October 7th, 1841. They moved to Iowa in 1855, where they resided until the time of his death, which occurred January 22nd, 1898. Twelve children were born to this union, seven of whom, five sons and two daughters survive to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother.

For several years Mrs. Corns had been in feeble health, but in the past few months complications arose which baffled the skill of physicians and the loving care and solicitude of children and friends, and she passed away peacefully “over the river” on Thursday, August 30th, aged 75 years, 3months, and 6 days.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, at Bentonsport, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. S. McElhiney, of Fairfield, Friday afternoon, August 31st.

For over twenty years the deceased had been a consistent member of the Adventist church, and died resting trustfully in that faith. The large congregation of friends and neighbors who were present at the funeral, proved the love and respect with which Mother Corns was regarded by all who knew her.

After the services the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery by her husband. The children who had ministered to her in her last illness, and who were present, were Martin, Charles, Alonzo, and Frank Corns, of Bentonsport, and Rufus Corns of Farmington, Mrs. Addie Musser, of Bentonsport, and Miss Edith Baker of Ottumwa.
