Herbert E. Duckworth
Herbert E. Duckworth, son of Captain William A. and Rebecca C. Duckworth, was born in Davis county, near Bloomfield, Iowa, April 28, 1863, and passed away at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, Jan. 31, 1941, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 15 days, having been in failing health for some time.
He came to Keosauqua in 1882 where he has since made his home save for two years in Wahoo, Neb., and three years in Seven Pines, near Richmond, Va.
He was married to Addie Anderson of Wahoo, Neb., who, with their son, William, and one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Duckworth was a keen student of his times and maintained an active interest in the affairs of his day. For a number of years he served as chairman of the Democratic Central Committee for the county and also served as Auditor of Van Buren county. He was a good business man and for some time owned and operated a hardware business in Keosauqua. He was a good citizen, a true friend and a kindly neighbor and was loved by all who knew him. He was a member of the Keosauqua Congregational church and for a number of years took an active part in its services.
For more than fifty years he has held membership in the following masonic bodies: Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, A.F. & A.M., Moore Chapter No. 25, Royal Arch Masons, and El Chanan Commandery No. 28, all of Keosauqua, Iowa. Last June he was honored by the members of El Chanan Commandery on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his membership. He was also a life member of Kaaba Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine of Davenport, Iowa.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Anna, of Keosauqua, Iowa, one grandson, Louis Duckworth, of Glendale, Calif., two brothers, Albert N. of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Lewis S. of Wichita, Kansas, and his stepmother, Mrs. Margaret Duckworth of Bonaparte, these together with a number of other relatives and a host of friends mourn his departure.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. C.H. Orf, were held from the Burnett funeral home on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 2, 1941. Burial in Oak Lawn cemetery was with full Masonic rites with El Chanan Commandery serving as escort.
Chas. Wheatley, wife and daughter, Anna, and Miss Vera McCullough of Fairfield; Jay Fellows of Wyaconda, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Rider and son, Tommy, of Farmington, and Mrs. Musette Easter of Bonaparte were among those from out of town who attended the funeral service.
