OBITUARY SKETCH

George Washington Vickers was born near Wilksboro, North Carolina April 8, 1823 and died at his late home in Bonaparte, Iowa, June 5, 1903, aged 80 years, one month and 27 days.

He was of a family of eleven children of whom one brother and three sisters are known to be living.

H lived in North Carolina until 8 years of age. One winter was spent in Kentucky, going from there to Indiana where he lived in Rush and Fayette counties until 1852 when he came with his family and parents to Albia, his parents remaining here until their death.

He remained in Albia but a short time, living in Ottumwa during the winter of 1852 and moving to Bonaparte in May 1853 where he spent the remainder of his life.

He was married to Mariah W. Tullis in Indiana February 7, 1849 and to this union were born ten children of whom seven are living. The eldest died an infant. Sarah J. died at the age of 4 years. Lamertine W. lives at Brada, Neb., Margaret A., Michael F., Oliver G. and Temple B. live in Bonaparte. Florence L. Scramlin lives at Quote, Mo. Margaret A. Wiley lives at Warren, Idaho. Charles R. died in infancy.

His wife died in 1875 the youngest living child Temple B. being then a boy of 4 years. He kept his family together and has ever proved his devotion to them, a feature of his care being that his evenings were always spent at home with the motherless children.

His illness was of several years duration and he died surrounded by his children. He was converted in a series of meetings held in the old Baptist church of Bonaparte in the fall of 1860 and was baptized by Rev. Eggleston on New Year's day, 1861.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon with interment in the Bonaparte cemetery, Rev. J. A. Ayrault officiating.
