Death Came to Aged Citizen After Long Period of Gradual Decline

John Brown, a pioneer of Van Buren county, and probably the oldest man in the county, died at his home in Keosauqua Monday night of this week. Mr. Brown would have been ninety-seven years old this coming May. He had been seriously ill for several weeks.

The deceased was a remarkable old man in many respects. Of sturdy Irish stock, he was a man of strong character-firm in all his convictions and true to his own best judgments. He was always honest and industrious, and respected by all his acquaintances. He was of a very quiet and retiring disposition and for that reason not well known to many people. But he was a real gentleman.

Mr. Brown was a native of Ireland, but came to America when fourteen years old. He had made Keosauqua his home for a great many years. His wife preceded him in death. He is survived by three daughters and one son. Two of the daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Holden of Oklahoma and Mrs. Nora Lindsay of Birmingham, were with him at the end. Another daughter, Mrs. Sarah Davis of Oklahoma, was not present. His son, Will Brown of Wyoming, had visited his father, but had been called home because of sickness in his family.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Keosauqua Thursday, March 13.
