FRANCIS JOHNSTON
Francis Johnston, the fourth son of William H. and Martha Forbes Johnston, was born in Carroll county, Ohio, on Feb. 22, 1841, and died at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, on Feb. 10, 1931, lacking only twelve days of having attained the age of ninety years.
He came with his parents to Iowa at a time when he was four years of age and they located on a farm near Mt. Zion and he remained a citizen of Van Buren county throughout the entire period of his life.
He enlisted as a member of Co. I of the Nineteenth Iowa Infantry at the beginning of the Civil war and served throughout the entire period of the war, being honorably discharged in August, 1865, at which time he had attained the rank of second lieutenant. He participated in some of the most severe battles of the Civil war, amongst which particularly was in the siege and fall of Vicksburg, and the battle of Prairie Grove, in which latter battle his brother, Thomas, then a lieutenant, was killed.
On November 29, 1871, he was united in marriage with Miss Louisa E. Stewart, who still survives him. There were born to them three children, one daughter, Etta Mae, dying in infancy; a son, Craig L., now of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and a son, Harold E., now of Washington, Iowa. He is also survived by one sister, Amanda Johnston, three granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
