Thomas Groves
Thomas Nelson, son of Jacob and Ruhama Groves was born in Adams county, Ohio in 1834, and passed from this life on May 24, 1921,
at the age of 86 years, 11months, 17 days.
He came with his parents to Iowa in 1851, settled on a farm one and one-half mile east of Milton, Iowa. There he grew to manhood and was
engaged in school teaching and carpenter work
He was married to Rachel C. Smith May 1st, 1855. To this union ten children was born: Franklin, who died June 14, 1875; J. W. of Wood
Lake, Nebr.; Mrs Ida Luke, Johnston, Nebraska; C. N. and Mrs Jane Wise of Milton, Iowa; Mrs, Alice Gibson and Mrs. Amanda McKee
of Troy; William of Des Moines, Iowa; George and Robert who resided at the old home and cared for their father in his declining years.
Mr. Groves has been in declining health most of the winter, but only confined to his bed about ten weeks.
He was raised in the Christian church and united with that church about 40 years ago.
He has lived on the home place for 46 years where his family all grew to manhood and womanhood.
He was quiet and obliging, always ready to help those in need. Never finding fault and always satisfied with what ever befell his lot.
His wife preceded him in death six years ago. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Caroline McManis and Mrs. Louisia Rinabarger, both
of Milton, Iowa.
He was one of our early pioneers and suffered the privation and hardship of pioneer life.
He will be greatly missed by his friends and neighbors who has known him and where he has lived so long.
The funeral was held from the home Thursday morning at 10 a. m. conducted by Rev. P. M. Conant. Interment at the Groves
