NECROLOGICAL

Died--At his home in Bonaparte, Ia., Oct. 31, 1900, Mr. Joseph Meek aged 70 years, 4 months and 22 days. The funeral took place from his late residence in Bonaparte on Friday, Nov. 2, 1900, Rev. G. W. Barber of Drakeville, Ia., conducting the service. Joseph Meek was the youngest of nine children, six sons and three daughters, children of William and Elizabeth Meek who came to Iowa in an early day. He was born in Constantine, St. Joseph county, Mich., June 9, 1830. He came to Iowa July 12, 1837 with his father's family and settled in this place where he has made his home continually for 63 years. He was married to Miss Mary Ward April 18, 1852. To this union one daughter was born. His wife died July 12, 1853, the daughter died Feb 18, 1858. He was married to Miss Mary A. King Nov.2, 1856, to this union seven children were born, six daughters and one son, all of whom with his companion and 19 grandchildren survive to mourn their loss. One sister, Mrs. A. H. Woods, also survives him. He made two trips to California overland. The first in 1854 and the second in 1864, remaining each time about one year. He was interested in the milling and manufacturing interest with his brothers, Robert and Isaiah Meek for about 30 years, after that he engaged in farming and stock raising. Uncle Joe Meek was well known in this country where he had a large acquaintance. The funeral was attended by a large congregation of friends and neighbors.
