Levi R. Cummings, 89, of Bonaparte, died Tuesday, August 13, at 3:45 a.m. in the Hainline Rest Home at Bonaparte after a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 2, 1879, south of Bonaparte in Van Buren County, the son of Robert and Mary Thompkins Cummings. He was the eldest child.
He married Elizabeth Irene Lightfoot on March 27, 1907 in Bonaparte. She died February 18, 1964.
He farmed until 1948 when he retired and moved to Bonaparte. Except for a few years in Kansas, he spent his entire life in this area.
He had just received his Masonic lodge 50 year certificate.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Donald Shelman, Mrs. Robert Tade, both of Hillsboro R.F.D., and Mrs. Alma Derr of Chicago, Ill,; 1 sister Mrs. Belle Riley of Farmington; 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandsons and 2 great-grand-daughters.
He was preceded by his parents, wife, 1 brother and 3 sisters.
The funeral service will be Thursday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Bonaparte United Methodist church with the Rev. L. E. Winfrey of Hillsboro officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery with Masonic rites.
The body was moved from Miller's Home for Funerals in Farmington on Wednesday afternoon to the Carl Wilson Reposing Home at Bonaparte to lie in state until time of service.
