Malvin David Sinclair, 82, Leando,Iowa died April 5, 1999, at the VanBuren County Hospital, Keosauqua, Iowa of complications from emphysema. He was born September 13, 1916 in Monroe County, Iowa to Earl and Nellie Miller Sinclair.
He graduated from Albia High School in 1933. Malvin, also known as "Pat" or "Mal" to his family and friends. worked as a farm hand before going to work for Morrell's in Ottumwa. He married Daphen Hankins in 1937 and they had four children. He served with the Fifth Division, 28th Regiment, of the U.S. Marine Corps in WW II in the South Paacific, was wounded in battle of Iwo Jima, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross. He returned to Morrell's and susquently served in numerous leadership positions, including personnel director, division manager and plant manager until his retirement in 1977. With retirement he was able to devote more time toward training and showing different breeds of horses. He gained statewide notoriety as an accomplished equestrian, with one of his Tennessee Walking horses winning the Iowa State Fair Championship three years in a rows. He married Carlotta Mattox Thompson in 1980 and they lived in Prim, Ak. until returning to Iowa in 1989 to live in Leando until his death. Carlotta passed away on March 22, 1997.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carlotta; brother, Malcolm(Mike); infant sister; step-son, Max Thompson, and daughter-in-law, Dawn VanDrome Sinclair.
He is survived by Daphen Hawkins of White, S.D.; sister Lucille Raridin of Dallas , Tx; Sister-Arlene Stewart of Bozeman, Mt; 2 daughters-Marilyn Bowen of Brookings, S.D. and Judy Sinclair of Aurora, Co.;2 sons-Dean of Davie, Fl. and Rick of Clifton, Va. 1 step-daughter-Tammy Thompson of Oregon and a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Thompson of Agency, Iowa.
Funeral will be at 1:00p.m. April 8, at the Robertson-Jay Funeral Hone, Ottumwa, Iowa. Pasator Phil Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in the Ottumwa Cemetery.
