John F. Leaverton was born Feb. 16, 1825 in Wayne county Ind., and died Oct. 17, 1900 at his home in Cantril, Ia. In early childhood he went with his parents to the state of Ohio where he grew to manhood. Sept. 17 1850 he married Miss Martha A. Covault. On the 18th day of Oct. 1850, with his young wife he landed in Van Buren county, Iowa, on Home Prairie about four miles northeast of Cantril. It was here he made a home and lived till 1882, when he moved to Cantril. They had eight children, six of whom died in early childhood. The two remaining are Mrs. Lyia [sic?] Stott who resides in Cantril and Alvin Leaverton who resides on part of the old homestead. Living in this county he has one brother James Leaverton and a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Harbin and three sisters and one brother in Ohio and one sister in Indiana. He has been an active member of the Mt. Zion Protestant church for thirty-five or forty years. Another of Iowa's noble pioneers is gone. Fifty years ago today John Leaverton became a citizen of Van Buren county, Iowa. He has been one of the strong men who have made Iowa one of the world's greatest common wealth. While he was loved and esteemed by all who knew him, it was in the home as husband, father and grand-father his presence was best known and most deeply felt and appreciated. In this great and sudden bereavement the invalid wife and mother has the sympathy of the entire community, but after all her great comfort and consolations is, that knowing she could no longer keep him by her side in this world, she has the full assurance that at best it will be but in a few short years when she may go to him. His funeral was from the home and conducted by Rev. P. B. Newman and assisted by Rev. J. W. Carson. He was laid to rest in the Hoskin cemetery by the side of his long departed little children.

She has kindly shared the obituaries with me, and I'll share them here. John F. Leaverton is the son of Thomas and Lydia (Dwiggins) Leaverton and grandson of John Foster Leaverton of Highland Co. There is no indication of the newspaper this was in, and the title is "OBITUARY.")
