William Eli McLeland, oldest son of Robert Newton and Charity Ann (Smith) McLeland, was born in Vernon township, Van Buren county, Iowa, June 5th, 1850, and died at his home in Milton, Iowa, February 13th, 1918, at the age of 67 years, 8 months and 8 days. He was united in marriage to Isabelle Teter, October 26th, 1872, and later moved to a farm near Unionville, Mo., where they resided some two years.

In the spring of 1875, he moved to a farm near Cantril, Iowa, and lived in the immediate vicinity until the fall of 1906 when on account of failing health he gave up the farm and moved to Milton, Iowa, where he has ever since resided.

To this union were born seven sons and one daughter, who are all living, Harvey, Frank, Harry and Blanche Lee of Milton, Lon and Ray of Brule, Nebr., George of Exselsior Springs, Mo., and Clarence E. of Los Angeles, Cal., all of whom were present at the funeral.

Besides the family he leaves to mourn his loss sixteen grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters, Newton McLeland of Palisade, Nebraska, Charley McCleland of Omaha, Nebr., Guy McLeland of Cantril, Iowa, Esther Loring of Nepesta, Colo., Alma Work of Cantril, and Fannie Heckinger of Corning, Calif.

He united with the M.E. church when a young man and remained a firm believer until the end. He was also a charter member of the K. of P. lodge of Cantril, Iowa, of which he was a faithful member while health permitted his attendance.

He was a choice companion, a kind and loving father, a reliable neighbor and friend. He was highly respected and will be much missed by his large circle of friends from the community where he has so long resided.

The funeral was held from the M.E. church in Milton, Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. M. Smith. The interment was in the Milton cemetery.

Card of Thanks.

We desire to express our heartfelt thanks to the neighbors and friends for all assistance during the sickness and at the death and burial of our husband and father.

Mrs. W. E. McLeland and Children
