Conrad Henkle

Conrad Henkle was born in Roth, Hesse, Germany, November 8, 1840, and died in Bonaparte, Iowa, March 12, 1912, aged seventy-one years, four months and four days.

He came to the United States in 1856, landing at New Orleans June 9th. From there he came to Iowa locating at Agency with an uncle, and in January, 1860, moved to Bonaparte.

On September 29th, 1861, he enlisted in the Tenth Illinois Cavalry and served until the close of the war when he returned to Bonaparte.

October 2, 1865, he and Miss Laura I. Cresap were married and to them were born four children, three of whom survive: - Mrs. T.S. Hines of Bonaparte, and Mrs. C. F. Schneider and Mrs. C. B. Collins of Chicago. An only son, George M., passed away in 1903.

He was a member of the Elias M. Ware Post No. 516 G.A.R., the I.O.O.F. Lodge and the Iowa Legion of Honor.

He had a sister and two brothers, none of whom ever came to America and all are now deceased.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Thursday afternoon at two with Rev. J.H. Taylor preaching the sermon and the remains were intered [sic] in the Bonaparte cemetery.
