Charles L. Wilkinson passed away April 2, 1924 at the home of his son, Charles C. Wilkinson, in Bonaparte, Iowa, after a lingering illness of over 10 months, at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 7 days.
Charles L. Wilkinson was born on the 26th day of September, 1832, in Burlington county, New Jersey, and was the third child of Charles Wilkinson and Sarah Rogers Wilkinson. His mother's ancestry were among the first settlers of Pennsylvania. Her grandfather, William Rogers, was a brother-in-law of William Penn, the distinguished colonizer and Governor of Pennsylvania in its early days, and came over with Penn.
Charles L's father was a native of Pennsylvania and a merchant-tailor. His children were given a fair common education. He died in 1836 in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1843 his mother with her four children came to Iowa, and settled in Harrison township, Lee county. They resided in this township 17 years and then moved to Cedar township.
In 1857, May 27th, C.L. Wilkinson was married to Josephine L. Anderson, the oldest daughter of T.O. Anderson, of Cedar township, Lee county, Iowa. To this union were born two children, one of whom is living, Charles C. Wilkinson. The family resided on this farm in Cedar township until 1882 when they moved to Bloomfield on account of the failing health of the wife, who died Oct. 11th, 1891.
Funeral services were held at the home of the son, C.C. Wilkinson on Friday afternoon, Rev. Coppoc officiating, with interment in the Bonaparte cemetery.
