JOHNSON, PROPER

Sunday, May 3, 1914, was a very sad and very quiet day in Bonaparte for in the early morning of that beautiful day, the life of Carl Johnson had gone from his young and vigorous body, being taken very suddenly and without warning, by a severe attack of pneumonia.

Had he lived until the 27th day of next month, June, he would have reached his majority. He was born in Sigourney, Iowa, June 27th, 1893, being the second son of John and Anna Johnson.

For ten years he has lived in Bonaparte, and for three years he worked in the office where this is printed; where he was a valued assistant; where his older brother, Harold, was also employed for several years; and where a younger brother, Andree, is now learning to be a printer.
Several months ago he went to Sheffield, Ill., at an increase in wages and there he spent the winter. For several weeks he has been at home here, and on last Monday he was taken ill. His condition was not considered serious, although there was fear of pneumonia. On Saturday afternoon and evening he rapidly grew worse and about midnight he died.

The father, John L. Johnson, is employed at Newton, Iowa, and being notified by telephone arrived Monday noon.

Carl was shortstop of the Bonaparte baseball team and was excellent in that position. Large floral pieces were sent by the Bonaparte ball team and fans and by the Hillsboro team.

No death in years has so shocked the community. It was so totally unexpected, and the young man was so well known and so young and so vigorous that his many friends have been able to think of but little else since his untimely decease.

Besides the father and mother, he leaves to mourn: four brothers, Harold, Andree, Oscar, and Ludvig; and three sisters, Emma, Mrs. Clara Proper and Nellie.

Funeral services are to be held this afternoon at the late home with Rev. L. T. Hughes of the Presbyterian church officiating and interment in the Bonaparte cemetery.
