Mary Rebecca Whiteley, daughter of Joseph W. and Sarah Giles Whitleley was born Dec. 12, 1855 [at] Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Her father came from England in 1847, and was employed in the woolen mills in several eastern states, coming west to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and locating at Bonaparte in 1856.
Mary Whiteley was united in marriage with I. W. Allender and they made their home at Burlington, Iowa, for a number of years, then moved to Lamoni where her husband was in the lumber business. There their daughter, Bessie passed away.
Later the family moved to Guthrie, then the capital of Oklahoma. They built a large residence just opposite the state house where they made their home until Mr. Allender's death.
Since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Viola Scott of Tahlequah, Okla., where she was tenderly cared for until her passing on Friday, Aug. 14, 1942.
Ten years or more ago she suffered a severe stroke, and later fell from her chair, breaking her hip, since which time she was confirmed invalid. She also had cataracts on both of her eyes causing complete blindness during the past year.
She was devoted to her family and kept up a large list of correspondents during her years as an invalid. She had a wonderful personality and her passing will be mourned by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
