The Armstrong Family

Our respected citizen, Perry Armstrong, is the son of James and Hettie Armstrong, who came by team in 1838 from Highland Co. Ohio near Miami to a farm located north west of McDaniel cemetery in Van Buren County Iowa. James Armstrong was born in Pittsburg, Pa in 1801 and his wife was born in Maryland in 1807.

Perry was the tenth of their eleven children and was born in Farmington April 16, 1846. His devoted wife was Mary Alice Lorton to who he was married in 1912. His previous wife and the mother of his sons, Clifford A., a civil engineer in the southern states and Craig E. of Keosauqua, was Louisa Hathaway. He also has four grandchildren.

When only eighteen years of age he volunteered his service to the Union cause, being this early a skilled sharpshooter, and when in a contest at Moscow, near Memphis with 1,500 others, he won first honor by placing a bullet exactly on the mark three times in succession.

Perry as one of the 16th corps under Bearman, fought mostly in Missouri and Tennes[s]ee. At Fort Collier his company captured the fort twice in one day and made a passage to move supplies to Gen. Sherman.
