Harry C. Gilbert, son of William and Stella Creswell Gilbert, was born in Bonaparte on Aug. 17, 1886 and died in the Elks hospital in Tucson, Ariz., on Aug. 10, 1954, lacking just a week of being 68 years of age. He attended the Bonaparte public school and grew to young manhood here. He was in World War I and was stationed in Germany for about two years. He was one of the organizers of the Sargeant-Osweiler American Legion of Bonaparte, was a past officer of same and always had a prominent part in all Legion activities for many years. He was a member of Commercial clubs and other organizations here that were for the best interests of Bonaparte and Van Buren county. He resided in Burlington for the past few years and was an interviewer in the state employment service and was a member of the Elks club and the Masonic order. He had gone to Arizona to spend the winter for the past several years. His only surviving relatives are three cousins, Mrs. Virgie Allen of Bonaparte, Mrs. Grace McNamar of Keosauqua and Mrs. Ethel King of Des Moines.

He was a member of the Elks club and Masonic order at Burlington.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m., in the Bonaparte Presbyterian church, with the Rev. John Gill, pastor of the church, conducting the service. Burial was in the Bonaparte cemetery. A Masonic service was held at the grave and there was also a military service by a firing squad from the Sargeant-Osweiler American Legion post. Taps were sounded by George L. Simmons.
