Wallace E. McCarty
Following is a copy of the telegram Mr. and Mrs. Harry McCarty of Westfield Iowa, received advising them of the death of their son, Harry:
"Deeply regret to inform you your son, private first class Wallace E. McCarty, U.S. Marine Corps, lost his life in the service of his country 16th of May, 1942. It may become necessary to temporarily inter his remains in the localities were his death occurred. When further report is received you will be informed. To prevent possible aid to our enemy do not disclose name of his ship or station. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. T. Holcomb, Lieut. Gen., U.S. Marine Corps."
Wallace enlisted in the Marines May 14th, 1940, and was in the service two years and two days. He had a 15 day furlough last September which he and his relatives enjoyed. He was an anti-aircraft gunner.
He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry McCarty of Westfield, Iowa; three brothers, Paul R., and wife and daughter, Judith of Linden, Iowa, Errol L. of Balboa, Panama Canal Zone, and Warren J. at home. His mother is better known as Stella B. Franklin, formerly of Bentonsport. Wallace attended high school at Bonaparte in 1938-39, his junior year.
