Killed by Lightning
Mt. Sterling, June 2nd -- During an electric storm here last Wednesday afternoon, Joe, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Ferguson, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. His father, who was with him at the time, received a severe shock from which he did not recover for some time.
Mr. Ferguson and his two boys were cutting grass near the house. A shower came up and they ran to the trees for protection, Mr. Ferguson and Daniel under one and Joe under another, 50 feet distant.
He had no sooner reach the tree then there was a terrific crash of thunder and Joe was seen to fall. His father ran to him but he was dead, having been killed instantly. The bolt struck him on the ear and ran on down his neck and body, leaving a distinct mark. This happened at 2 o'clock. It was all so sudden that it could scarcely be realized the child was dead yet nothing could be done.
The funeral was held at the Ferguson home at 1 o'clock Thursday and the five Burial was made in the Pardon [Purdom?] cemetery at Keosauqua, at 4 o'clock.
John A. Ferguson, the father, is a member of the board of supervisors and is a well known stock raiser.
