The people of this city were sadly shocked last Friday morning when the tidings that Florence Sturdivant was dead was given publicity, and upon first hearing the report it was not given credence. But the announcement was only too true, as the many friends found when an effort was made to verify the rumor.
For many years the deceased has been a great sufferer from aggrevated [sic] hemorrhoids and at last, as the only means of relief, she decided on an operation, during which the end came. The attending physicians used every means known to medical science in the effort to restore to the body the breath which had just stopped, but without avail. She diet of heart paralysis caused by chloroform.
The father and mother of the lady, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Shipley were in the country, and a telephone message was sent to them at once, appraising them of the death, and they immediately came home. The little daughter, Beth, the remaining member of the family, was at Douds, a guest of the Cheney family, and a message was also sent her and she, accompanied by Mrs. Cheney and Miss June came down in the evening.
A strange fatility [sic] seems to have followed this family. The father was the first to go, and although he had been ailing some time, still the end came just when it was least expected. A little later the little son was drowned while skating near town, and now the mother has joined the loved ones on the other side, leaving the daughter of tender years to battle with the world. But that she will be tenderfully [sic] cared for is assured.
Florence Sturdivant was born in Bonaparte, Jan. 22, 1863, being 42 years, 5 months and 11 days old at her death. She was married to Albert N. Sturdivant of Bonaparte, February 21, 1883, and was widowed Jan. 2, 1900. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, Tuesday, July 18, at 2 o'clock, Rev. Clark officiating, and the remains were laid to rest by the side of the husband and children in the White cemetery.
She was a good woman, and greatly loved, and our city is today mourning the end of the useful life.
