Anna Cresswell Ross was born in Bentonsport, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. Removing with her parents, Mr. Mrs. Robert Cresswell, to Ottumwa in 1883, she was employed for a time as teacher in one of our public schools. A greater portion of her young life was spent as a hospital worker, where she stood as a guard while others slumbered, and helped to capture the strongholds of terror and sorrow, changing them into hospitals of Mercy and peace. Early in life she united with the Church of Christ and always adorned in the profession of Christianity by a life of trust and service. She was united in marriage in 1892 to Wm. L. Ross, of Connersville, Ind., where she lived a life of activity in church and home, and wherever else she was needed, until ill-health necessitated close retirement. The past two years she had been a constant sufferer, bearing her pain with patience that puts to shame our complainings of lesser trials. If her heart ever ached it was hidden by her bright smile and pleasant words. Her death was painless, departing this life at the home of her sister, Mrs. W. E. Lawhead, of Burlington, Iowa, on the evening of Jan. 5, in the presence of her parents and in the loving care of Him who was nearest and dearest. She was weary, laid down to rest and fell into that dream sleep which kisses down her eyelids still. She was buried from the home of her brother F. B. Cresswell, in Ottumwa, Thursday afternoon, January 7, 1904, with sermon by Rev. F. F. Stoltz of the Presbyterian church, and at the grave the beautiful but sad services of the P. E. O. sisterhood were observed, of which order Mrs. Ross had been a long time member.
