A HOME IS DESOLATED
Death Removes the Son--Seth Richard Brown.KILLED BY THE CARS
One of the saddest duties that we have been called upon to perform in a long while is chronicling the death of Seth Brown, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brown of this city, which occurred at Eldon last Thursday evening. Seth had been a resident of Bonaparte all his life and counted among his friends almost the entire inhabitance [sic] of the city, and to them the sudden announcement brought sorrow of that was very keen. The story of his death is as follows:
Seth had, for several months been engaged in railroad work at Eldon, and was but recently promoted to the position of switchman in the yards and worked during the day. On the day of his death he was called to duty on the night shift and friends of the young man stated that he was adverse to going on night duty, but the orders of the superiors allowed no choice and he entered on his duties with the usual light heart. For two hours the work progressed with the usual precision and the crew had thrown a string of cars onto one of the numerous sidings with Seth on top to set the brakes, when a severe bump caused by the moving cars meeting others that were stationary through Seth from the top of the cars and directly under the wheels were the life was crushed out of the human habitation. A very few moments elapsed before his fellow workers were at his side but a glance told the awful tale and the form was taken in charge by the undertakers and prepared for removal to the home in Bonaparte. The cruel wheels had passed over the body in the region of the abdomen and again severed one of the lower limbs from the body.
Sad as was the incident, a duty yet more sad awaited the friends of the young man, that of breaking the news to the mother and father and this was telephoned to Bonaparte on Friday morning and a sympathetic friend acquainted the parents of the fact that the boy who was all the world to them, who had been tendered so carefully and lovingly to young manhood was no more, that his spirit had left this vale of sadness with no smile turned upward into the mother face and no word of good by to the broken hearted father. We are unable to picture the sadness that settled over this home when the calamity had been realized. But a short week before Seth had been home for a visit and all was happiness, and promised mother that he would soon again come home when he left for the work that was to demand tribute even to his life. He did return, sooner than he thought and the homecoming was the saddest that mortal mind can picture.
Seth Richards Brown was born in Bonaparte, Dec. 25, 1871, and died Oct. 26, 1905, being 33 years, 11 months and 1 day old.
The funeral services were held at the home on Saturday at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. Clark of the Presbyterian church officiating, and all that remained of the once friend was tenderly carried to the last resting place, followed by a large number of his acquaintances.
The floral tributes were many and beautiful, tendered in memory to the departed and in sympathy to the bereaved parents. One especially fine emblem was from the A. F. of L., an order of which deceased was a member, and eighteen members of this lodge attended the funeral in a body.
