Harriet Knox 1827 - 1912

Harriet Knox, a daughter of Thomas and Phalinda Knox, was born March 3, 1827 in Morgan County Ohio, and died 9 o’clock P.M. December, 31, 1912 at her home in Cantril, age 85 years 9 months and 28 days.

March 4 1854, she and Ellis Searight were married at Unionville Ohio, and came to Iowa in the same year, and settled near Upton where they engaged in the Mercantile business until about 1879 when they moved to Cantril and continued in the same business until his death, January, 29, 1899.

She was the mother of two children, Mary who died in infancy, and William E. who died at the age of 26 years.

While in her girlhood she joined the M. E. Church, and ever afterward remained a faithful and devoted member.

During her residence in Cantril, if absent from church services the congregation knew she was unable to be there.

She leaves two grand-children, Mrs. Vergil Cloonan of Alliance Ohio, and Miss Leah Searight, of Cantril. They were both at her bedside when she passed away. She also leaves three brothers and two sisters.

Wesley Knox of Keosauqua Iowa, Bethuel Knox, of Alda, Nebraska, Xerxes Knox of Ohio, Mrs. Lizzie Thompson and Mrs. Phil Wickersham of Woodriver, Nebraska. Besides many nephews and neices in various parts of the county, among them A. Knox of Cantril who was with her in her last hours.

Funeral services were held from the M. E. church Thursday, Jhnuary, 2, 1913. Rev. Orcut of Milton preaching the sermon. Interment was made in the Cantril cemetery.
