THOMAS H. DYE

Thomas Henderson Dye, only child of Samuel and Sarah Dye, was born in Davis County, Iowa, June 26, 1847, and passed away at his late home in Milton, Iowa, at 7 p.m., March 14, 1924, his age being 76 years, 8 months and 17 days. All of his life was spent in Iowa near the place of his birth, except two years that was spent in California.

On March 8, 1873, he was united in marriage with Harriet L.?, and to this union four children was born, three of which preceded him in death, Alta Mary, who died in infancy, Harry at the age of 8 and Charles at the age of 22. The only surviving member of the family being the daughter Amy, who is the wife of Jess M.?, of Milton.

On November 18, 1923, he was ? of a companion who had travelled most fifty years of life’s journey with him; he felt the loss keenly, and his health declined rapidly from that day? In order that his home might be maintained, and that he might receive the loving care of an only child, Mrs. Bell with the grandchildren to whom he was much devoted, moved into the home. Here every care was given that loving hands could bestow, but in his weakened condition he was unable to combat the ravages of the disease that held him firmly in its grasp. His end was calm and peaceful.

A great satisfaction to his loved ones was his willingness to go, and the full possession of his reason to the last.

For many years he was affiliated with the M. E. church, and had also been a member of the Masonic fraternity for more than fifty years. Other than a few facts in his life, extended comment on one who has lived in a community fifty years, is wholly unnecessary. His life, like our own, is an open book with many pages, with ourselves as the author. Let us therefore be careful how we write.

In his passing the daughter is bereft of the only remaining loved one of the immediate family, and the community has lost a citizen who has stood for the highest ideals in community life of Milton, and who has been an outstanding character for many years.

The funeral was held from the M. E. church in Milton, Sunday afternoon, March 16th, conducted by Rev. H. G. Gilbert. The Knights Templars, of which he was an honored member, had charge of the burial services at the church and also at the grave.
