Cecelia Hilliard, eldest daughter of Lewis and Sarah Hilliard, was born Jan. 11, 1845, in Butler County, Penn., and departed this life at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 25 days. When about ten years old she came with her parents to Van Buren County, Io., where she lived until her marriage to James L. Brown, Jan. 1, 1868, when they located in Scotland County, Mo., to begin housekeeping on the farm, where she lived continuously for 53 years, except one year spent at Milton, Iowa, and the past year with her daughter Mrs. Frank Bennett of Mt. Sterling. To Mr. and Mrs. Brown four children were born: Thomas Albert, who preceded the mother in death twenty years; Mrs. Jane Beckett, of Argyle, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Bennett and John W. Brown, of Mt. Sterling, whose living being present at the time of her death Jan. 4, 1922. She is also survived by a brother Samuel A. Hilliard, of Granger, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Butts, of Ottumwa, Io., and Mrs. Elizabeth Bailey of Bentonsport, Io. Also by eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She united with the M. E. church 51 years ago, during which time she remained a constant and faithful servant of the Lord. For the past fifteen years she was unable to take active part in church work, owing to poor health. Hers has been truly a beautiful life, always ready to care for those in sickness and sorrow. For the past year she had been practically an invalid, but she bore her affliction with the greatest patience and cheerfulness, without even a murmur. Greatly will she be missed by the loved ones left behind.
